Basic FAQ's
Air conditioning - how does it work?

Whattype of air conditioners do you supply ?
Large range of products: Small systems for bedrooms, study, living room, larger systems for larger rooms, concealed ducted indoor units, wall & ceiling mounted units. We also supply large modular systems for office buildings and other commercial applications (see Commercial Section of this web site).

Do you supply portable air conditioners ?
No. Portable units are a quick remedy to a localised heat problem. Many portable air conditioners are more costly than fixed systems, which are usually much more effective in cooling performance, most fixed systems will also provide heating. Many people who purchase or hire portable air conditioners end up buying a fixed system.

My air conditioner is broken - Can you come and fix it ?
No. 3 D Air Sales Ltd is a distributor of Mitsubishi air conditioning systems. We supply air conditioning products to installation companies, most of which will have a service department. There are many service engineers advertised in Yellow Pages, or you can contact HVCA for a recommended list of maintenance contractors who will carry our service and repair work. It is advisable to arrange content for an air conditioning option.

What size of air conditioner do I need for my office ?
"Rule of thumb" guide: 120 Watts/m2 floor area. If there is a large window facing the sun, add another 40%. If there are heat gains from electrical equipment, e.g. computers, photo-copier, etc, the electrical load must be added. This is only a guide. Before making a purchase, we would recommend an installer to carry out a survey, to make a calculation of the heat gains.

How much does it cost ? (Supply and installed guide price examples*)
Small room 12m2 3KW cooling Wall mounted indoor unit £1100
Office 16m2, 5KW Ducted systems including air ducts and grilles £3000
Large room 24m2, 7KW cooling cooling Cassette system £2500

*Includes for 7metres of connection pipework between indoor and outdoor units. Does not include the provision of an electrical supply, condensate pumps. VAT not included. Installations in city centres will be more expensive. The above figures are a rough guide. We can recommend an installer to carry out a survey, and provide a quotation for supply and installation - call our Sales Office on 020 8668 1112.

What is the difference between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries & Mitsubishi Electric ?
Both companies manufacture air conditioning products. They are separate in all respects, apart from the Mitsubishi name. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) is the "mother company " of all Mitsubishi companies. Its origins date back to 1870. Mitsubishi Electric was part of MHI until 1920, when it split away from the main company. MHI manufactures split system air conditioners at its factory in Japan, which are imported in to the UK by 3 D Air Sales Ltd.

What are the electricity running costs of an air conditioner ?
The power consumptions of the complete range of air conditioners can be found in the Technical Section.
The variable which will affect the overall power consumption is the amount if time the systems is running.

An air conditioner is normally selected to cope with the maximum cooling demand, for example:
An office with a maximum cooling load in the summer of 5KW would be fitted with an air conditioning system of 5KW. But for most of the time it is possible the cooling load would vary between say 1 and 4KW. An inverter system will vary the compressor speed to adjust the heating or cooling output to suit room requirement.

So if the air conditioning compressor was operating at an average of 50% diversity, this would be the determining factor in calculating the running costs. In a room which has the sun as the main source of heat gain, the diversity could be 30%, but for an office with a constant heat gain from electrical equipment, the diversity could be 80%.

EXAMPLE
For a small air conditioning system of cooling capacity 2.5KW (power consumption max = 0.5KW)

Running cost = Max KW power consumption x diversity x tariff
= 0.5 KW x 50% x 7.0 pence/KW hour
  = 1.75 pence per hour

What is best for me to do if I require air conditioning to be fitted ?
It is best not to wait until mid summer when it is very hot, and every air conditioning installer is working seven days a week.

Call 3D Air Sales Ltd 020 8668 1112, or call your nearest HRP Service Centre. We will give you some basic advice, and get an installer to help you with a survey, and to agree with you the selection of the right equipment for the job. .
